How to Add Fonts to Canva

Learn how to add fonts to Canva: use the free built-in library, or upload your own OTF, TTF or WOFF files through the Brand Kit on a paid Canva Pro plan.

Quick answer: Free Canva accounts pick from the built-in font library only. To upload your own font file, you need a paid plan (Canva Pro, Teams, Education, or Nonprofits). Open Brand, go to your Brand Kit, scroll to Fonts, and upload an OTF, TTF, or WOFF file you are licensed to use.

Canva is one of the easiest design tools to learn, but its fonts work differently depending on whether you pay. Before you go hunting for an upload button that may not exist on your account, it helps to know exactly what your plan allows. This guide walks through both paths honestly: using the fonts Canva already gives you, and uploading your own font files if you have a plan that supports it.

First, check what your plan allows

This is the part most tutorials skip. Uploading a custom font file is a paid feature. If you are on the free plan, you will not see an upload option, and that is expected, not a bug. Free users still get a large built-in library of fonts that are licensed for use inside Canva designs.

Custom font upload is available on Canva Pro, Canva Teams, and the free Canva for Education and Nonprofits plans. If you are not sure which plan you have, click your account avatar and check your subscription before continuing.

Option 1: Use a font from Canva’s built-in library (any plan)

  1. Open or create a design, then click a text box, or add one from the Text tab on the left.
  2. With the text selected, open the font dropdown in the toolbar at the top of the editor.
  3. Scroll the list or type a name into the search box to find a font.
  4. Click a font to apply it instantly to the selected text.

This is the only font route on the free plan, and for most projects it is plenty. The library covers a wide range of styles, from clean sans-serifs to display and script fonts.

Option 2: Upload your own font (paid plans)

If your plan supports it, you add custom fonts through your Brand Kit rather than inside a single design.

  1. From the Canva home screen, open the Brand section in the left sidebar and select Brand Kit. If you manage more than one kit, choose the one you want to update.
  2. Scroll down to the Fonts (or Brand Fonts) section.
  3. Click Upload a font and choose your file. Canva accepts OTF, TTF, and WOFF files. If a WOFF file fails, try a TTF or OTF version instead.
  4. If prompted, confirm you have the legal right to use the font. Only upload fonts you have purchased or that are licensed for this use.
  5. To use it, select a text box in any design, open the font dropdown, and look under your uploaded or brand fonts, listed above Canva’s standard library.

A note on licensing: uploading a font to Canva does not give you the right to use it. Fonts are software, and most come with a licence that spells out what you may do. Stick to fonts you bought or to clearly free ones. Google Fonts is a good, genuinely free source, and many of those fonts are already inside Canva anyway.

If an uploaded font will not appear

A few things tend to cause this. Large font files can take a moment to process, so give it time on a stable connection. If the font still does not show, try re-uploading it, or convert it to TTF or OTF and upload again. Make sure you are looking in the right design and that the text box is actually selected. It also helps to refresh the editor, since the font dropdown occasionally caches an older list until the page reloads. If a font has several weights, each one usually uploads as its own file, so add bold and italic versions separately if you need them.

Finding free fonts you can legally upload

Since uploading does not grant a licence, the safest approach is to start from fonts that are already free for the use you have in mind. Google Fonts is the obvious one: every font there is open source and free for commercial projects, and you can download the TTF files directly. Other reputable libraries publish clear licences too, but always read the terms, because “free for personal use” is not the same as “free for a client logo.”

A quick tip: because so much of Google Fonts is already inside Canva’s built-in library, search the font dropdown first. If the font is there, you can skip the upload entirely, and it will work on any plan.

How uploaded fonts behave across your designs

Uploaded fonts are stored at the Brand Kit level, not inside one design. That means once you add a font, it is available to every design that uses that Brand Kit, which is handy for keeping a consistent look across social posts, presentations, and documents. If you are on a Teams plan, members who share the Brand Kit can use the uploaded fonts too, so you do not each have to upload the same file.

One thing to plan for: if you remove a font from the Brand Kit later, designs that relied on it will fall back to a default. It is worth keeping the original font file somewhere safe rather than treating Canva as your only copy.

Frequently asked questions

Can I upload fonts to Canva for free?

No. Uploading your own font file requires a paid plan such as Canva Pro or Teams, or the free Education or Nonprofits plans. Standard free accounts can only use Canva’s built-in font library, which is still large and fully licensed for designs made in Canva.

What font file types does Canva accept?

Canva accepts OTF, TTF, and WOFF files. If a WOFF upload does not work, converting the font to TTF or OTF and uploading that version usually resolves it.

Where do uploaded fonts show up?

They appear in the font dropdown when you select a text box, listed near the top under your brand or uploaded fonts, above Canva’s standard library. They are tied to your Brand Kit, so they are available across your designs.

Is it legal to upload any font I download?

Only if the font’s licence permits it. Fonts are licensed software, so upload only fonts you have purchased or that are explicitly free for this kind of use. Google Fonts is a reliable free source, and many of its fonts are already built into Canva.

Can I delete a font I uploaded?

Yes. Return to the Fonts section of your Brand Kit, hover over the uploaded font, and remove it. Designs that already used the font may fall back to a default font once it is gone.
